Who We are as a Tribe
The Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake is a federally-recognized native sovereign nation. Our primary purposes relate to the overall wellbeing of our Tribal Members and our families. We have active programs and relationships with our Pomo tribal neighbors in Lake County California that will help us preserve our Pomo culture. Many of these activities help us rediscover lost traditions, spiritual beliefs and help revive our dying languages. Because we know that the world is a different place than when our ancestors were here, our Tribe works very hard to learn different ways of achieving economic self-sufficiency. We engage in a variety of economic development strategies which would not only benefit our families but also our neighbors. We strive to make sure that wherever we do business, it is done in a manner which respects our neighbor’s and larger community’s needs. In this vein, our Tribe looks forward to working with you. 

Purpose of the PositionThe Environmental Technician reports to the Environmental Director and will provide field and program assistance to the Environmental Department. The incumbent will perform specific objectives and work plan activities as directed in compliance with environmental programs administered by the Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake tribe.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Set up and maintain grants, contracts, vendors, and other files.
• Assist in coordinating all field activities.
• Assist in the development of environmental outreach materials and maintain records.
• Provide technical support for the Environmental Department.
• Operate and maintain various field equipment, such as sondes, turbidity meters, digital tablets for data collection, flow meters, and more.
• Coordinate and work as part of a team to carry out field activities, data collection, and protocols. Assist with obtaining access to public and private lands, report preparation, literature searches, and other projects as needed. Coordinate with various project leads and provide periodic updates.
• Generate digital spatial data, reports, and maps. Assist with processing and transferring of data specific to grant requirements.
• Conduct water quality sampling to meet Clean Water Act requirements in waterways that affect tribal lands.
• Conduct general habitat assessments.
• Conduct Clear Lake Hitch Observation surveys during all stages of the CLH life cycle.
• Assist with investigating complaints concerning environmental programs and negative environmental situations on the reservation.
• Attending environmental training to enhance program knowledge specific to grant work plans and environmental regulations (Tribal, federal, state, county).
• Generate summaries of work completed to be included in directors' reports to Tribal Administrator and Executive Council
• Demonstrate sensitivity to Tribal history, lifestyle, and culture.
• Regular, reliable attendance during normal business hours.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

• Must be able to familiarize yourself quickly and accurately with new and existing computer software and office procedures and operate a variety of office equipment.
• Utilizes computer software to access and prepare specific reports, resolutions, and necessary documents.
• General computer skills such as the Internet and popular software programs, including, but not limited to, Email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to learn mapping software (such as Google Earth, Arc GIS, etc.) is helpful.
• Ability to research protocols to assist in developing biological sampling strategies to analyze conditions of habitat and species.
• Clear and concise verbal and written skills.
• Excellent communication skills: utilizing the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with professionalism, excellent grammar, respect, and courteousness.
• Modern office practices and techniques.
• Skilled in the operations of various office equipment, etc.

• Must be able to familiarize yourself quickly with laws, regulations, and ordinances related to natural resource management.

• Hours worked may vary depending on special projects or as needed by the Department, including some evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays.

Education and Experience
Required:

• High School Diploma, G.E.D or two (2) or more years of comparable work experience in lieu of education PLUS:
  • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment Skill Assessment to evaluate the following areas:
    • Basic computer skills
    • Basic math skills
    • Measuring tape/ruler skills.

• Required to possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Tribe’s insurance carrier.

Preferred:

• Previous work experience, education courses, or certifications in natural resource management preferred.

Physical Requirements

• This position requires the physical agility to access cultural sites in diverse terrain.
• Navigating uneven terrain, including but not limited to walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and wading in streams.
• Prolonged periods in a stationary seated position, such as working on a computer.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Frequently move, transport, and manipulate computer equipment up to 50 pounds.
• Verbal communication sufficient to exchange accurate ideas and information.
